Galápagos PlastiLab transforms plastic into education and action
, March 2, 2026
In Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal, and Isabela, 420 students from different schools participated in Galápagos PlastiLab, an initiative that engages young people from Galápagos in the different stages of the circular economy — from collecting plastic waste to transforming it into school supplies they use themselves.
Through 176 workshops on recycling, circular economy, and environmental awareness, students turned waste into opportunity. As a result, the equivalent of 68,000 plastic bottle caps were removed from the environment and transformed by their own hands into 919 rulers, 1.065 protractors, 616 pens, and 177 clipboards.
Funded by the Galápagos Life Fund, the project is implemented by Diego Añazco in partnership with the Galápagos Ecological Airport and Fundación Proyecto Social. As a pioneering initiative within Ecuador’s national education system, it also has the endorsement of the Ministry of Education.
