Partnerships Advancing Sustainable Fisheries in Galápagos

GLF, July 17, 2026

As part of this initiative, a Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) will be deployed off Isabela Island to support more efficient and sustainable artisanal fisheries. By attracting pelagic species to a designated area, the FAD will help reduce the time fishers spend searching for target species while easing fishing pressure on other fishing grounds.

o support its deployment, the Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy (INOCAR) will lead the technical studies and site assessments required for its installation. As part of this effort, specialized diving equipment was delivered to support the underwater research and monitoring activities needed throughout the project.

This initiative is made possible through the support of the Galápagos Life Fund (GLF) and the collaboration of the Galápagos National Park Directorate, INOCAR, COPAHISA, and Conservation International Ecuador. Together, these partners are advancing innovative solutions that strengthen marine conservation while supporting the sustainability and well-being of Galápagos’ artisanal fishing communities.
