Children in Santa Cruz celebrate Orca Club graduation in Galápagos

With an exhibition showcasing the activities carried out throughout the program, 50 boys anda girls, mostly children of fishermen from COPROPAG, participated in the Orca Club graduation—an environmental education initiative that fosters an emotional connection with the ocean through experiential learning from an early age.

Over the course of 20 weeks, 72 field outings were conducted, allowing participants to explore their marine environment through experiences such as kayaking, surfing, and artistic activities on the beach, strengthening their bond with the ocean.

Through the interactive planner-book Dreaming with Orcas, children not only learned about marine life through stories, but also brought these lessons into practice in the ocean, transforming learning into a deep and meaningful experience. This journey guides them toward becoming ocean stewards, feeling—even if just for a moment—like orcas among the waves.

This project, funded by the Galápagos Life Fund (GLF), highlights the importance of nurturing new generations committed to conserving the natural heritage of Galápagos and protecting the marine-coastal ecosystems that sustain life on the islands.
