Galápagos Strengthens Marine Protection Capabilities with the Repowering of the Sierra Negra

By Galápagos Life Fund, May 22, 2026

As part of the third anniversary of the Galápagos Life Fund (GLF), the repowered ocean-going patrol vessel Sierra Negra was officially delivered. This strategic initiative aims to strengthen operational capacities for marine control, surveillance, monitoring, and research within the Galápagos Marine Reserve and the Hermandad Marine Reserve.

The repowering project was financed by the GLF and technically implemented by WildAid in coordination with the Galápagos National Park Directorate (DPNG), as part of the government project focused on strengthening the archipelago’s marine control and surveillance system.

The initiative restored the full operational capacity of one of the environmental authority’s primary ocean-going patrol vessels, incorporating major upgrades to its propulsion, power generation, navigation, communication, and onboard safety systems.

Key improvements included the replacement of main engines and generators, modernization of specialized bridge equipment, structural modifications, a comprehensive vessel refit, and technical support for the operation and preventive maintenance of the newly installed systems.

The Sierra Negra plays a strategic role in the DPNG’s maritime operations, supporting patrol and surveillance activities, environmental monitoring, logistical operations, scientific research, and emergency response efforts across more than 200,000 square kilometers of marine protected areas.

During the official ceremony, authorities and institutional representatives emphasized the importance of continuing to strengthen public-sector capacities for marine protection in Galápagos, as well as the value of partnerships among government institutions, international cooperation partners, and allied organizations in generating tangible conservation outcomes.

“Today, we are not simply presenting technical improvements to a vessel. We are strengthening a critical tool for monitoring, control, surveillance, and operational response within the Galápagos Marine Reserve and the Hermandad Marine Reserve,” said Mónica Calvopiña, Executive Director of the Galápagos Life Fund.

The Galápagos National Park Directorate also highlighted that the project will extend the operational life of one of the archipelago’s most emblematic conservation vessels for many years to come, while enhancing the safety and operational capacity of the personnel who carry out marine protection efforts on a daily basis.

As part of the event, authorities, members of the GLF Board of Directors, and invited guests participated in an official tour aboard the Sierra Negra Vessel

Through initiatives such as this, the GLF continues to promote strategic investments aimed at strengthening public environmental management and consolidating sustainable financing mechanisms for marine conservation in Galápagos.
