The Gills Club: Discovering a Hidden Universe
, September 30, 2025
On San Cristóbal and Isabela Islands, Chicas con Agallas (The Gills Club) immersed themselves in the fascinating microscopic world through Foldscopes—portable microscopes that unveiled a universe teeming with life and details invisible to the naked eye.
In San Cristóbal, 12 girls built and customized their own Foldscopes, collected samples from their surroundings, and experienced science in a “natural laboratory” full of excitement and discoveries.
In Isabela, 10 participants explored science independently, strengthening their critical thinking, learning to record their findings, and deepening their connection with the nature around them.
Each experience nurtures the girls’ confidence, curiosity, and leadership, inspiring them to see themselves as agents of change and future scientists of Galápagos.
This project is a collaborative effort funded by the Galápagos Life Fund, led by USFQ Galápagos, with the support of Galapagos Conservation Trust, Oceans for All Alliance, Craghoppers, Galapagos Sharksky Travel and Conservation, Metropolitan Touring, Hotel Finch Bay, and Daughters of the Deep
