Sustainable Communities and Scientific Experiences in Isabela

By Galápagos Life Fund, February 12, 2026

With funding from the Galápagos Life Fund, the marine component of the Science and Sustainable Communities project—developed by the Charles Darwin Foundation on Isabela Island—was successfully implemented.

This component is part of the Student Participation Program, which enables first and second year high school students to fulfill a requirement established by Ecuador’s Ministry of Education through hands-on experiences as community leaders and environmental and socio-environmental advocates,

Throughout its implementation, experiential and nature-based learning activities were carried out, supported by Charles Darwin Foundation research projects operating on Isabela, including sea turtles and seabirds, Scalesia forest restoration, and sustainable agriculture. In addition, learning spaces were created around sustainable practices in collaboration with user sectors of the Galápagos Marine Reserve, including tourism and fisheries, strengthening the connection between science, community, and conservation.
