Strengthening Artisanal Fisheries in San Cristóbal

By Galápagos Life Fund, March 20, 2026

With funding from the Galápagos Life Fund (GLF), FUNDAR-Galápagos and the Artisanal Fishing Production Cooperative of San Cristóbal (COPESAN) launched the project “Traceability and Sustainable Commercialization Systems” through a participatory workshop held in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, marking the official start of this initiative.

The workshop brought together COPESAN members and leadership, along with representatives from key institutions across the archipelago, with the goal of building a shared understanding of the current situation of the collection center and the fishing organization. This first step will help guide concrete actions to improve collection, processing, and commercialization processes, incorporating traceability and gender equity criteria.

This initiative, supported by GLF, represents a commitment to strengthening local capacities and advancing toward a more sustainable, organized, and resilient artisanal fishery—one that contributes both to the well-being of fishing communities and the conservation of Galápagos’ marine ecosystems.
