Santa Cruz now has its first official noise map

By Galápagos Life Fund, March 3, 2026

With 60 technical measurements conducted across main streets, docks, residential areas, and the power plant, we now have — for the first time — scientific data on noise pollution on the island.

This map, developed in coordination with the Galápagos National Park Directorate and the Municipality of Santa Cruz, marks an important step toward evidence-based environmental management.

The project led to the installation of four monitoring stations that record noise levels 24/7 in Santa Cruz. In addition, 383 citizen surveys were conducted, revealing that:

🔹 73% feel that noise affects their quality of life
🔹 86% believe it impacts Galápagos species

Traffic, port activity, and loud music were identified as the main sources of noise.

Implemented by Jeiser Vernaza and funded by the Galápagos Life Fund (GLF), this project is laying strong foundations for informed decision-making — protecting both community well-being and the unique ecosystems of Galápagos. More data. Greater awareness. Better solutions.
