“Guardians of Marine Life” activities begin with monitor training
, February 13, 2026
With funding from the Galápagos Life Fund, the Guardians of Marine Life project has officially launched. Co-implemented by ECOS and the Galápagos National Park Directorate, this initiative will strengthen local knowledge, connection, and stewardship toward marine life, while promoting youth participation in conservation actions.
During two working sessions, facilitators, educators, technicians, and volunteers reviewed and refined monitoring protocols for lagoons, mangroves, and sea turtles, as well as safeguards and child protection protocols, ensuring strong technical and ethical standards in the project’s implementation. Additionally, the monitoring team conducted a field trip to apply the methodologies standardized during the workshops
The project will train local youth as monitors in facilitation and participatory monitoring protocols with a gender-equity approach, engage at least 300 young people in citizen-science activities, conduct 36 monitoring surveys at Tortuga Bay, and organize 6 immersive camps at Las Bachas. On Isabela Island, activities will focus on lagoon and mangrove monitoring.
